Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station to conduct security exercise

2019-06-25

Fredericton, N.B. - The Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLNGS) will be participating in a one-day security exercise on Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

The exercise will involve the Point Lepreau Nuclear Response Force team and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The exercise will test security contingency procedures as required by the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, and confirm Station readiness for security emergencies.

Residents may see emergency response vehicles in the community and hear radio communications simulating a security event at the Station.

"By conducting large exercises such as this, we are able to verify that all components of the security emergency response strategy are effective," said Eric Keenan, Security Commander at PLNGS. "Exercises also give responders a chance to practice their roles and to identify any challenges with the plan so we can continuously improve and be as prepared as possible as a Station."

About the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station

The Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station is a 660 megawatt (net) nuclear generating station and a base load contributor to the New Brunswick electrical grid. It produces enough non-emitting electricity to power more than 333,000 homes per year and is a foundational piece of both our domestic energy supply and our export sales. Point Lepreau is a major component of the generating assets that will contribute to the provincial goal of having as much as 75 per cent of the electricity used in New Brunswick coming from clean, renewable or non-emitting sources by 2020.
