Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where is the money coming from for the incentive program?
The funding is provided by Natural Resources Canada through the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).
2. Why is the government giving money to help install charging infrastructure?
Transportation accounts for 25% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Government of Canada believes a shift to a cleaner energy source for transportation is key in Canada’s shift to a low carbon economy. One of the key barriers to zero emission vehicle adoption is the lack of charging and refueling stations in Canada.
Funding from the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) will address this barrier by increasing the availability of localized charging opportunities throughout Canada.
3. Why is NB Power providing these incentives?
NB Power is a delivery organization selected by Natural Resources Canada to deliver a component of the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) funding. NB Power has existing structure to deliver a program on behalf of Natural Resources Canada.
4. When does the EV incentive program start?
Starting on January 31st, 2022 and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
5. When does the EV incentive program end?
The application process will remain open until the budget allocated for this program is distributed or depleted or until such time as the Government of Canada terminates it.
6. What if I installed a charging station or incurred costs to start the installation of a charging station before January 31st? Can I still get my incentive?
No. Project spending cannot occur until the project is approved by NB Power and the Participation Agreement is signed by both the applicant and NB Power.
7. Do I have to have a business in New Brunswick to qualify for an incentive?
Yes, applicants must be a legal entity validly incorporated or registered in New Brunswick. All charging stations receiving funding under this program must be located in the Province of New Brunswick.

10. Is it a first-come, first-served incentive program?
Yes. There is a maximum of charging stations per application:
- 3 Level 2 (208/240V) charging stations 3/3 kW to 19.2 kW AND
- 1 Fast charging station 20 kW to 49 kW OR
- 1 Fast charging station 50 kW and above
11. What do I need to do to participate in the incentive program?
You can receive your incentive by completing the online registration form. Your claim will be reviewed to confirm eligibility. If eligible, you will be sent a Pre-Approval form to complete and submit. Assuming the application is complete, a Participation Agreement will be forwarded to you for signature. This agreement must be signed and received by NB Power within 30 calendar days to qualify for the program.
12. How long will I have to wait to receive my incentive?

13. What charging stations are eligible for the incentive?
To be considered for funding, charging stations must meet the following requirements:
- Level 2 (208 / 240 V connectors 3.3 kW to 19.2 kW)
- Any EV charging station commercially available and CSA, ULC, UL or Interlink certified for use in Canada. The charging stations must have a SAE J1772 standard plug head or be a proprietary* connector type rated for a minimum of 3.3 kW power output.
- Fast charger 20 kW to 49 kW
- Any EV fast charger commercially available and CSA, ULC, UL or Interlink certified for use in Canada. The fast charger must have at least one (1) charger connector that is CHAdeMO compliant and one (1) charger connector that is SAE Combo or be a proprietary* connector type rated for a minimum of 20 kW power output.
- Fast charger 50 kW and above
- Any EV fast charger commercially available and CSA, ULC, UL or Interlink certified for use in Canada. The fast charger must have at least one (1) charger connector that is CHAdeMO compliant and one (1) charger connector that is SAE J1772 Combo (CCS) or be a proprietary* connector type rated for a minimum of 50 kW power output.
*Proprietary connector types can represent a maximum of 75% of all charging connectors installed at the same project site. The remaining balance (25% or more) must be universal charging connectors (J1772, J1172 Combo and CHAdeMO) of the same category (e.g. Level 2 or fast charger).
- Charging stations must also be new and purchased equipment. Leased charging stations do not qualify under the funding program.
- All charging stations must be connected – having the ability to communicate with other stations/server/icloud through a cellular/wireless signal.
14. Do single home residential charging stations qualify for the incentive?
No, only charging stations for use in public places, on-street, workplaces, light duty fleets and multi-unit residential buildings.
15. How much are the incentives?
The level of incentive is determined by the type of charging station being installed:
Type of Charging Station | Maximum Funding |
Maximum of units per application |
---|---|---|
*Level 2 (208 / 240 V) connectors 3.3 kW to 19.2 kW |
Up to 50% of total Eligible Expenditures, to a maximum of $5,000 per connector* | 3 |
Fast charger 20 kW to 49 kW |
Up to 50% of total Eligible Expenditures, to a maximum of $15,000 per fast charger | **1 |
Fast charger 50 kW and above |
Up to 50% of total Eligible Expenditures, to a maximum of $50,000 per fast charger | **1 |
16. Do I qualify for the incentive if I lease the charging stations rather than buy?
No, the charging stations must be new and purchased equipment.
17. Is there a limit on how many charging stations I can purchase and install in this incentive program?
Yes. There is a maximum of charging stations per application:
- 3 Level 2 (208/240V) charging stations 3/3 kW to 19.2 kW AND
- 1 Fast charging station 20 kW to 49 kW OR
- 1 Fast charging station 50 kW and above
18. Can I receive any other funding to assist in the purchase and installation of charging stations?
Yes, however there are stacking limits. Funding from all levels of government cannot exceed 75% of the total project costs unless the applicant is a provincial or municipal government or their department or agency, in which case the stacking limit is 100% of the total project cost. If an applicant receives funding under this program, they will not qualify for any additional federal government funding for this project.
19. What charging stations qualify for the incentive?
Level 2 and fast charging stations that have the ability to communicate with other stations/server/icloud through cellular/wireless signal.
A list of qualifying chargers can be found on this list/link…
The charger must be new, commercially available and certified for use in Canada.
20. Are provincial government departments and crown corporations eligible for charging station incentives?
Yes, provincial or municipal governments or their departments or agencies qualify for funding however federal governments or their departments or agencies do not qualify for this funding.
