NB Power registers the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Milltown Generating Station Decommissioning Project

Fredericton (NB) – NB Power has registered the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Milltown Generating Station Decommissioning Project and is seeking public input.

The EIA will be available at the St. Stephen Town Hall and the St. Croix Public Library as well as the Department of Environment and Local Government’s website.

“The decision to decommission the Station has been a difficult one which we recognize affects the local community.  In the end, our decision had to consider the best interest of all our customers,” said NB Power’s President and CEO, Keith Cronkhite. “We are getting valuable community input through our engagement with the Milltown Community Liaison Committee and First Nations and we will continue to gather input from all stakeholders as we move through this important stage of the project.”   

The Milltown Generation Station accounts for about 0.8 per cent of NB Power’s hydro generation, so there will not be a major impact on the overall New Brunswick power grid resulting from the decommissioning.

Decommissioning the Station and removing the dam will allow for the restoration of approximately 16 kilometers of the St. Croix River. It will also open the area for potential recreational and traditional uses.

Following the permitting process, work is expected to begin in spring 2022 and continue throughout 2022.
