Synergy Challenge 2024

NB Power’s Power Reactor Operating Licence, issued by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLNGS), requires a full-scale emergency exercise to be held every three years.

In the event of an emergency with off-site impacts, NB Power works closely with the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (NB EMO).

In addition, Synergy Challenge 2024 brings together a wide range of agencies and organizations, including the Canadian Red Cross, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and the Maine Emergency Management Agency.

The collaboration extends beyond local agencies, with national and international observers evaluating the exercise to ensure NB Power meets the highest standards of preparedness.

PLNGS is supported by a comprehensive emergency preparedness and response program that includes our Emergency and Protective Services department, which features security services, a fully equipped fire department, ambulance support and a 24/7 response organization.

On October 29 and 30, 2024, NB Power and NB EMO will hold Synergy 2024, a large-scale emergency exercise involving multiple jurisdictions and organizations.

Residents may see emergency response vehicles in the community and hear radio communications simulating a security event at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.

Synergy Challenge will rigorously assess the test and demonstrate the collaborative effectiveness, readiness, response capabilities and decision-making process of NB Power, NBEMO and all emergency response partners involved. This exercise will also demonstrate the implementation of the latest provincial nuclear emergency response plan.

NB Power appreciates the continued support and participation that community members and organization provide during on-going drills and emergency preparedness exercises.

Synergy 2024 demonstrates NB Power’s commitment to emergency preparedness and maintaining public confidence in the safety and security of PLNGS operations.
